International Conference on Strength Training

Last week, Dr. Kimi Sato had the honor of presenting at the 8th Annual International Conference on Strength Training (ICST). This years proceedings were held in Oslo, Norway on October 24th – 28th at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.

Dr. Sato reporting back from the conference:

It is always good to see experts from all over the world getting together in one place to share current research findings. Prior to the conference, I was able to meet the sport science faculty from the Norwegian School of Sport Science as well as some coaches at the Norwegian Olympic Training Center. It was great to see another country’s approach to sport science education and research, as well as seeing their laboratories and training facilities.

Even though I was “wowed” by many aspects of what they do, we are not too far from them. Our sport science program is certainly heading in the right direction and catching up with our international counterparts.

Dr. Sato presented on bilateral strength asymmetry. This is a hot-topic currently in the sport science literature and his work was well received at the conference alongside other experts in the field from every corner of the strength training world.

Attendance at conferences such as ICST really is a two-way street in terms of learning. As well as educating delegates on asymmetry and our Center of Excellence at ETSU, Dr. Sato has been able to bring back cutting-edge knowledge that will help our staff and students in their studies and applied work.

With ICST 2012, we add to our already strong presence in Europe, Australia, and North America. Next year promises further international activities. We hope that this can help raise the awareness of our Center, ETSU, and sport science in general around the world.
