This is the second of a new series of blog posts outlining some of the events and projects that we are involved in each month at the Center of Excellence. While we cannot include every detail publically, we hope this will give some more information into some of the smaller things we do alongside large events and day to day teaching, coaching, and research.
Thursday, November 1st
To kick off the month we have a conference call with two other Olympic sports that have expressed interest in bringing their athletes to ETSU. The Olympic designation that we first garnered in April was such a big step forward because this gave the green light to the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) to discuss potential partnerships.
Friday, November 9th
Meg Stone and the other members of the Athletic Task Force for 125 will meet (for the third time) regarding the development of athletics on campus as we plan towards ETSU’s 125-year anniversary.
Monday, November 12th
Early registration begins for academic courses in the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences. Other registration begins shortly after. Sign up early to avoid missing out on popular courses!
Wednesday, November 14th
Meg Stone will be on ETSU’s campus radio WETS-FM between 9-10 am. Tune in to 89.5 to catch Meg discussing the Olympic Training Center (OTC) and the Center of Excellence. This is a great opportunity to let more people know about what we are doing here. The broadcast will be in Scottish but the station will be providing a translator.
Following the radio show, a group will be meeting to further the development of an advisory group for our OTC. It is very important for us to have influence from outside of our organization as we look to improve our presence in the local community and beyond.
Friday, November 16th
Our Coaches and Sport Science College is rapidly approaching. Friday the 16th is the deadline for poster submissions. This represents a great opportunity for students, educators, and coaches to present applied sport science and coaching information. The audience is unlike any that you will find at other conferences and events, so the poster presentations promise to benefit all parties. Judges for the awards and prizes are all heavily involved in the applied field and understand the difference between sport science and exercise science.
Thursday, November 22nd
The Center of Excellence staff and students are, in a way, a BIG family, and will be having Thanksgiving dinner for those that are in town. Warning, there may be a food shortage in the local area at that time.
Wednesday, November 28th
We have a very close association with ETSU athletics and on the 28th we will meet with the athletic department about recent progress and events, along with ideas of how to move forward.
Fall Sport Action Throughout November
At time of writing, two of our three fall sports are still going. Women’s soccer had a strong season, going 12-6 for the year, but fell last weekend in the conference tournament.
Men’s soccer is preparing for its final regular season game on November 3rd. They have already clinched a playoff spot, but look to solidify their current 2nd place standing ahead of the Atlantic Sun conference tournament.
Volleyball currently sits in 3rd place in conference but still have 5 regular season conference games to play. Three of these contests are held at home, so come support them in Brooks Gym:
November 2nd vs. Florida Gulf Coast University (7 pm)
November 3rd vs. Stetson University (2 pm)
November 6th vs. Kennesaw State University (7 pm)
Post-Season Performance Testing
Additionally, post-season sport science performance testing is crucial to our monitoring program that we provide to our sports. The first of these is women’s soccer and will be followed by men’s soccer and volleyball once their seasons are done. It very much is an “all hands on deck” time for us in our facility!
We hope to report more on some of these events as they develop, and we welcome you to check back here for excerpts from next month’s calendar.
