This is the first of a new series of blog posts outlining some of the events and projects that we are involved in each month at the Center of Excellence. While we cannot include every detail publically, we hope this will give some more information into some of the smaller things we do alongside large events and day to day teaching, coaching, and research.
Thursday, October 4th
PhD student Mike Israetel is presenting on sports nutrition in room E134 of the MSHA Athletic Center (minidome) at 3PM. It was originally set up for medical students looking to learn more about sport nutrition but it is open to anyone who wishes to attend. A seminar on this topic will be held each week and interested parties should contact Mike (misraetel@gmail.com) to find out the details of future talks (the day, time, and location may vary week to week).
Also on Thursday we are holding a conference Skype call with a leading international sports technology company that is interested in helping us integrate the latest monitoring tools into our teaching curriculum, research, and applied work with sports teams.
Monday, October 8th
We will be holding a meeting regarding the formation of an ETSU committee specifically for the Olympic Training Center that we now have here. This is the start of an exciting process that will help everyone at ETSU benefit from having the Olympic rings on campus.
Tuesday, October 9th
Another meeting, this time with a large locally-based company regarding potential funding to assist our research and Center of Excellence as a whole. As well as building relationships nationally and internationally, local support is crucial to the success and impact of what we are doing here.
Saturday, October 13th
The Center of Excellence is honored to host the “President’s Classroom” on the 13th. This is a chance to supporters of East Tennessee State University what we do in the classroom, the laboratory, and on the field.
We are also happy to say that Liz Schoen, our Executive Aide, will be getting married later on Saturday. Everyone at the Center wishes Liz & Reid a fantastic day!
Monday, October 15th
This day we will be sending a comprehensive report to the US Olympic Committee outlining all of the progress we have had in the last three months. This is a quarterly report and we have much to feedback to our governing body.
Friday, October 19th
Meg Stone, Director of the Center of Excellence, will be heading to the Bristol YMCA to talk about the Olympic movement, our Olympic Training Center, and the work we do with our collegiate athletes at their staff motivational day.
Monday, October 22nd
Our trend of Monday meetings will continue on the 22nd with a conference call with the new CEO of USA Weightlifting. Welcome aboard Michael Massik!
Wednesday, October 24th
Rounding out the month is a special function held at the University of Tennessee for a Korean delegation who are situated there for 9 months to learn about coaching in the US sports environment.
We hope to report more on some of these events as they develop, and we welcome you to check back here for excerpts from next month’s calendar.
